Bobbing for Apples (Or How I Joined the Cool Group)

I recently caved in and bought an iPhone.

To be honest, I’d wanted one for a few years now. My five plus years
in Japan were spent using the same handset; in later years revealing
my mobile (or “dinosaur” as it was often referred) in front of friends
would inevitably result in comments such as how on earth could I still
be using such a “relic”?

Well, after moving back to Australia recently, I made the proverbial
beeline to the iPhones, bypassing all of the more sensible (i.e. cheaper)
options. All this talk of touchscreens, breezy internet connectivity, and
magical applications had me infatuated. The time had come to bid farewell
to Jurassic Park.

Using the new equipment got me to thinking about how well connected the world
is becoming (not an original thought, to be fair), and how easy it is for
many people to stay in touch with friends and family around the world utilizing
modern technology. Needless to say cross-cultural exchange and understanding
has also been influenced by this age of information; culture that once seemed
distant and foreign has now become more accessible and familiar thanks to the
internet, and other media.

For the time being (or at least until the next generation model is released), I’m
no longer the ridicule of my more technologically progressive friends, and can
enjoy being well connected on the go. Just don’t talk to me about my first phone
bill…

Enjoy your spring break!
