It may not be what first comes to mind when you hear the words ping pong,
but the ICC Ping Pong Match this year was boat loads of fun!!
It was my first time organizing a table tennis event and to be honest
I wasn’t sure what to expect.
But as soon as we got there the fun started right from the beginning!
The Table Tennis club members were friendly and informal and so were the
students who came. This time the number of international students actually
outnumbered the local students who came, but it was overall a good balance
of nationalities. Right from the get-go students of all backgrounds were
mixing and chatting and passing time until the event began.
The pairs and teams were arranged randomly and after three sets players changed
tables to allow for maximum cross-cultural exchange. Language and cultural
barriers soon faded away as everybody became focused on whooping each other’s
backsides table tennis style! (Nothing breaks down borders like the desire to
destroy and humiliate your opponent!)
After everyone was all ping ponged-out we were treated to a demo game by
some of the more experienced members of the Table Tennis Club.
They played at breakneck speed and showed us all up with their amazing talent!
After the hardcore pingpong-ing (my new favorite phrase) was over,
everyone got a chance to challenge a member of the club team.
This part was really exciting and everyone got really into the game.
Even some of the ICC staff got caught up in the fun!
Soon it was time to finish and everybody took a great group photo and thanked
the Table Tennis team for their time and cooperation. Afterwards lots of
students exchanged mail addresses, telephone numbers and Facebook info. It
was great to see how hardcore pingpong-ing (best word ever) can bring people
Overall the event was a great success and I really thought it was a great
chance for international and local students to interact and mix regardless
of language, nationality or department.
